Celebrating Western Monarch Butterfly Day with Wildlife Jewels' Mandarin Garnet the Monarch Butterfly!

Monarch Butterfly, Rescued in Solana Beach, 2023

Broken Wings and Hope: The Rescue Story of a Precious Monarch Butterfly Transformed into Stunning Art to Raise Awareness for Monarch Butterflies

In honor of Western Monarch Butterfly Day, we’re excited to share a special piece of art created by Wildlife Jewels that celebrates the beauty of the precious Western Monarch Butterfly. This piece serves as a reminder of the fragility of butterflies and wildlife, emphasizing the need for our collective action to protect and preserve them.

The Artwork

The artwork features a photograph of a Western Monarch Butterfly we encountered in Solana Beach. Sadly, this beautiful butterfly suffered an injury — a broken wing. Despite the injury, we were able to connect with this magnificent creature, and its story deeply inspired this artwork.

The stunning artwork titled: “Mandarin Garnet the Monarch Butterfly Gem’s Dreams” blends the precious Butterfly with a hand-painted coastal landscape, bringing the vibrant colors and vivid brushstrokes  bringing magical beautify of the butterfly to life. At the heart of the artwork sits the butterfly, perched atop our signature hand-painted gemstone. This symbolizes our belief that the life of a butterfly is more precious than any stone. It's a visual tribute to the beauty and fragility of nature, and a reminder that every creature plays a vital role in our world.

We are pleased to announce that this artwork will soon be available on the Wildlife Jewels Shop, with all proceeds going toward butterfly rescue and conservation efforts. Through this initiative, we aim to raise awareness for the plight of the Monarch Butterfly and inspire daily action to protect, rescue, and conserve these beautiful creatures.

The Story Behind the Butterfly

This particular butterfly is a precious male Western Monarch we found during one of our walks. He was struggling in the middle of the pathway, unable to fly. Upon closer inspection, we discovered that his wing was broken — likely due to the Ophryocystis elektroscirrha parasite, which has been known to affect Monarch populations.

We carefully rescued him, placing him in a safe, protected area and providing milkweed and fruits to help him regain strength. Unfortunately, due to the nature of butterfly anatomy, it’s impossible to repair a broken wing, but we did our best to ensure he was safe from predators, offering him nourishment until he could regain some strength.

How You Can Help Injured Butterflies

If you ever find an injured butterfly, especially one with a broken wing, here are a few steps you can take to help:

Place the butterfly in a safe location away from predators.

Surround the butterfly with milkweed plants, as they are a primary food source for Monarchs.

Offer overripe fruits such as oranges, bananas, berries, pineapple, or plums to nourish the butterfly.

Stay tuned as we will be sharing more about our butterfly rescue efforts and behind-the-scenes footage featuring this beautiful Monarch Butterfly! Together, we can make a difference and ensure these incredible creatures continue to thrive.

Thank you for your support in protecting and conserving the Monarch Butterfly!
