Threats to Wildlife: Fireworks

As you celebrate the 4th of July, please consider the impact of fireworks on wildlife. From hummingbirds and doves to songbirds, squirrels, seabirds, marine mammals, butterflies, bobcats, coyotes, mountain lions, and more, fireworks pose a great threat to wildlife. The lights and sounds shocks and frightens wildlife, causing fear, disorientation, collisions, and nest abandonment. Firework litter is a choking hazard and toxic if ingested, while pollutants from fireworks release harmful chemicals into the air, soil, and water, threatening both human and wildlife health.
