Wildlife Jewels EYES - Engage Your Eyes for Sealife™ Program
The Wildlife Jewels EYES - Engage Your Eyes for Sealife Program is a proactive initiative committed to saving coastal wildlife by actively searching for, monitoring, and reporting distressed wildlife.
Why EYES?
There is currently no organized system for identifying and reporting distressed wildlife, resulting in many wildlife going unnoticed or receiving help too late. Timely care is critical to their survival. The threats to coastal wildlife are increasing, with devastating events like domoic acid poisoning and mass starvation becoming alarmingly more frequent along the Southern California coast. These escalating crises are threatening our marine life, including seals, sea lions, dolphins, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, and many other vulnerable coastal species. The EYES Program mobilizes staff, volunteers, and community members to quickly identify and report distressed wildlife, helping to facilitate their timely transfer to rehabilitation centers for life-saving care. We believe every single wildlife matters, and every distressed wildlife deserves care. We are committed to saving as many lives as possible!
Program Highlights:
Coastal Monitoring: Regular monitoring of coastal areas including Solana Beach, La Jolla Cove, and Crystal Cove for distressed wildlife.
Proactive Crisis Response Team: A dedicated team on-call to respond quickly and search for distressed wildlife during crises.
Reporting & Documentation: Reporting of sightings with photos, location data, and descriptions.
Community Involvement: Volunteers and community members help identify, report, and track distressed wildlife.
Data Collection: Gather data on environmental threats and wildlife causes of distress.
Educational Outreach: Raising awareness through workshops and arts programs to encourage public participation in wildlife monitoring.
Tracking Environmental Patterns: Monitoring environmental conditions, such as pollution, oil spills, or fishing gear, which could threaten wildlife health and contribute to distress.
