Happy National Hummingbird Day!

From their magnificent fluorescent colors to their stunning intricate feathers, hummingbirds are truly inspiring. These acrobatic fliers can hover in place for extended periods and fly in multiple directions. As expert nest architects, their tiny, detailed nests are a wonder.I nspired by hummingbirds, robots and drones replicate their unique flying abilities. However, these remarkable birds face significant threats, with many species at risk of extinction. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, 8 species are critically endangered with a 50% chance of extinction within 10 years, 13 species are endangered, 13 species are vulnerable, 20 species are near-threatened, and sadly, 2 species, the Brace's emerald and Caribbean emerald, are already extinct.

Threats to Hummingbirds

Some of the threats to hummingbirds include habitat loss, predation by cats, window strikes due to reflective glass, and the use of contaminated nectar from dirty feeders. Additionally, brown sugar and sweeteners with high iron content can be harmful, while disturbances from loud noise, construction, loud dogs, and tree trimmings can impact nesting hummingbirds.

Celebrating Hummingbirds Through the Arts

We’re looking forward to celebrating hummingbirds tomorrow and inspiring our community to protect them at our Plant for Hummingbirds event at Newport Beach Civic Center Park! We’ll be planting flowers for hummingbirds, showcasing art and innovations inspired by these incredible birds, discussing the threats they face, and sharing how you can take action every day to help hummingbirds.

Along with planting flowers for hummingbirds, we’ll be showcasing beautiful artwork from our Wildlife Jewels® “Peridot the Hummingbird” Collection, inspired by a precious hummingbird and her chick we observed in their nest!

While this event is now at capacity, stay tuned for more exciting conservation activities coming soon!
