Celebrating National Bird Day: Honoring the Elegant Tern and Our Logo Inspiration

From a tragic drone crash to art, Rubellite the Elegant Tern inspires our mission to protect these majestic birds.

At Wildlife Jewels, we adore every single species of bird and are deeply committed to helping protect them. Birds are not only beautiful and fascinating, but they are also essential to the health of our ecosystems.

This National Bird Day, we’re celebrating the Elegant Tern—a magnificent bird that holds a special place in our hearts and embodies our mission to raise awareness about human-caused threats to wildlife. It is also the precious inspiration behind our original Elegant Tern painting and the centerpiece of Wildlife Jewels’ official logo.

Meet Rubellite

A Story of Hope and Resilience Rubellite is a precious Elegant Tern we had the joy of observing at Crystal Cove Beach. This beautiful bird is not only the muse for our original painting but also a symbol of the challenges faced by her species.

Rubellite’s story begins with a tragic incident in May 2021 at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve—an event that underscored the vulnerability of Elegant Terns and the urgent need for their protection. In May 2021, an illegally flown drone crashed at Bolsa Chica, causing unimaginable harm to the Elegant Tern colony. Over 3,000 Elegant Terns were forced to abandon at least 2,000 eggs, leaving behind a devastated nesting site. Among the countless victims of this incident were vulnerable baby terns, whose lives were lost.

Why the Elegant Tern?

This heartbreaking event moved us deeply and inspired us to feature Rubellite as a symbol of hope and resilience. Sadly, the Elegant Tern faces a wide range of challenges, including overfishing, drone interference, habitat loss, nest disturbances, plastic ingestion, oil spills, climate change, and other human-caused threats. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), they are currently classified as "Near Threatened" (NT), signifying their vulnerability to endangerment in the near future.

By choosing Rubellite and the Elegant Tern for our logo, we aim to share their beauty through the arts, while raising awareness about the threats these beautiful birds face and inspire action to protect them. Rubellite represents the enduring beauty and strength of the Elegant Tern species, serving as a powerful reminder of the vital need to protect their future. As an emblem of Wildlife Jewels, Rubellite stands for our commitment to wildlife conservation. Take Action to Protect Birds On this National Bird Day, we invite you to join us in honoring birds like Rubellite by taking steps to protect them.
