Meet “Meet Amethyst Thandi the Rhino”

Thandi is a beautiful Rhino who is a survivor of a brutal poaching attack which took place on 2nd of March 2012 . Sadly, this attack also claimed the lives of two male rhinos. Amazingly, Thandi has since had five calves, Thembi, Colin, Mthetho, Siya, and Zolani. On 1 April 2023, Thandi gave birth to her fifth calf, Zolani. Thandi along with her five calves and two adorable grand-calves reside at Kariega Game Reserve in South Africa.

Rhinos are Superheroes!

White rhinos are the largest of the rhino species, with males weighing up to 5,000 lbs!

Wide Mouth – White rhinos are named for their wide mouth, which they use to graze on grasses. The name "white" comes from the Dutch word "wijde" (meaning wide), not the color of their skin.

Habitat Preferences – White rhinos prefer grasslands and savannas, where they can graze in large herds.

Social Creatures – They tend to be more social than black rhinos, often found in groups, particularly the females and their offspring.

They can live for up to 60 years!

Threats to Rhinos

  • Poaching – The biggest threat to white rhinos is poaching for their horns, driven by illegal markets in Asia where rhino horn is falsely believed to have medicinal and status-related value.

  • Habitat Loss & Fragmentation

  • Climate Change

  • Human-Wildlife Conflict

  • Illegal Wildlife Trade Networks – Organized crime syndicates involved in rhino horn trafficking pose a continuous threat, using advanced methods to evade law enforcement.

  • Weak Law Enforcement & Corruption – Despite strong anti-poaching efforts, corruption and insufficient resources in some areas hinder conservation efforts and allow poaching to persist.
