World Wetlands Day 2024 and the Enchanting Wildlife of Wetlands!
On World Wetlands Day, we're delighted to share glimpses of the remarkable wildlife we encountered in less than two hours during our exploration at the San Elijo Ecological Reserve!
Southern California's wetlands serve as a crucial feeding ground and habitat for a diverse array of species, including endangered least terns, endangered Belding’s Savannah sparrow, threatened snowy plovers, brown pelicans, white pelicans, egrets, herons, cormorants, gulls, ducks, sea turtles, lizards, fairy shrimps, and more.
Sadly, since the 1850s, about 90% of California's coastal wetlands have been destroyed. (source)
Let's unite to preserve these wetlands and protect the invaluable wildlife whose lives depend on the health of these vital ecosystems.
