Meet “Morganite Rita the Raccoon”
Rita is a precious Raccoon who is a wildlife ambassador at the San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Wildlife Center. She was found as an infant in a community member's backyard, alone and crying out. Rita had become too habituated and would not be able to be released back into the wild.

Raccoons are Superheroes!
Dexterous robotics: Robotic hands and grippers have been inspired by raccoons’ ability to manipulate objects with incredible precision and flexibility.
Search & rescue drones: Inspired by their nocturnal abilities and keen sense of exploration, raccoons' habits have influenced the development of search-and-rescue drones that can navigate tight spaces in the dark.
Urban wildlife monitoring: Technologies designed to track and monitor urban wildlife, including raccoons, help researchers better understand their behaviors and adapt conservation efforts
Highly intelligent: Raccoons are known for their problem-solving abilities, with cognitive skills comparable to primates.
Dexterous paws: Their front paws are incredibly dexterous, often compared to human hands, allowing them to open jars, doors, and other objects.
Social creatures: While they are often seen alone, raccoons can form groups, especially in urban areas where food sources are abundant.
Vocal variety: They communicate using a range of sounds, including growls, screams, and purrs.
In the wild Raccoons typically live 2 to 3 but in captivity 10 to 15 years!
Threats to Raccoons
Habitat Destruction
Vehicle collisions: Due to their nocturnal habits, raccoons are at high risk of being hit by vehicles while crossing roads.
Human conflict: Raccoons often get into trash and buildings, leading to human-wildlife conflict and trapping or relocation efforts.
